One of our core values as an organisation is sustainability. We see social enterprise as part of a sustainable future for our charity. Through social enterprise, we can provide real opportunities to young people to gain work experience and training as well as generate income to meet our social objectives.

Through social enterprise, our profits reinvested back into the YMCA to fulfil our charitable work, furthering our mission for positive change by providing unconditional support to young people.

We have two social enterprises within YMCA Newcastle that offer apprenticeship training to young people.

Walker Park Café and centre

Serves as a community based Café and Centre for the local residents in Walker and surrounding Newcastle area. Our Café and Centre is more than just another place to eat, drink and relax, it is a reflection of our community. The Café & Centre is setup as a professional social enterprise for YMCA Newcastle, so every penny spent here helps support our charitable work with young people. By providing a valuable community service to the local residents, we are helping build stronger communities.

The Café & Centre provide a vital link for our young people in our communities. We provide the opportunity, resource and support to access local training and education. Our experienced Café management and youth work team supports the two full-time apprenticeships and volunteer posts.

We provide an excellent opportunity to help young people launch into a career in hospitality and catering. Learning every aspect of running a café and events centre.

YMCA Urban Mushrooms

Is our newest social enterprise project and again any profits that are made from this project directly benefit the young people we support. It also has an added environmental objective, based around urban farming using old building for new growth and reducing waste by growing local speciality mushrooms products on used coffee grounds and cardboard.

The Urban Mushroom project will provide training and education for four young apprentices. They will be supported by the management team and additional volunteers as required. The apprenticeships are based on entrepreneurship and enterprise giving the opportunity to learn a business from the ground up.
